What
good would it really do someone who aspires to be a guitarist or
pianist or any musician of an instrument, yet only
practices what they currently know and never attempts to actually
improve their technique or quality? You have to do the same thing with
a singing voice. It is an untrue way of thinking that what you've
got is what you'll always have, that there's no improving it. Think
of your voice as your instrument. The difference between training
your voice vs. an instrument you hold in your hands is that you
actually have to retrain your own physical habits when it comes
to singing as well as undoing pop-culture's definition of "quality,"
until it becomes second nature. We all know how well ingrained a bad
habit can be. Current habits will not just be unlearned, but replaced
with new, correct habits. New habits will be formed in posture,
breathing, register exercises, learning how to control air resonating
in different locations physically that cause different tones or
"voices," etc., that improve the quality of your voice as well as the
tone, control, stamina, and range.
Many singers stress their vocal cords during singing simply because they do not understand the basics of proper singing. It’s so important to understand how the vocal mechanism works and to work WITH your body and not against it. If your throat is sore after you sing, take heed! There is a reason! Getting some good vocal training is invaluable in terms of saving your voice from harm. Some basic things to look for in your body are: any kind of strain or muscle tension in the throat or facial area. When you sing, you need to be completely relaxed. When you start seeing or feeling tension, that’s when trouble can start. A good vocal coach can help you to see this in yourself and teach you how to avoid further vocal strain.
Revere's technique in training every student is grounded in a healthy
classical method. The quality of knowledge and betterment of your
"instrument" within this classical method that our technique is founded
upon is unsurpassed. Though, it is an understood that most people do
not desire to train for a career in musical theater. So for that
reason we do not focus strictly on that style because it is unrealistic
to think that is how you "want" to sing all the time. So we include
training in contemporary/modern songs (mainstream or Christian tunes)
of the student's choice as well, helping to aid the student in the
transition of the knowledge from one technique to others.
